Palmers pub wins Taste of the West Gold for 'Dining Pub'

Congratulations to all at The George Inn Chideock for winning Gold in the Taste of the West Awards 2020/2021. Following a prior visit to the Dorset pub from the award scheme judges, Jamie Smith and Amy Day received the great news in July 2021. The award recognises the high standards of the George Inn in the ‘Dining Pub’ category.

The popular Dorset thatched pub is a hit with locals and visitors to the area. The licensees pride themselves on providing freshly prepared seasonal menus alongside a full range of Palmers cask ales and carefully selected wines.

The talented tenants at The George Inn

Behind the award-winning service provided by the pub there is a great back story. Jamie Smith had helped manage the pub for four years before taking over the tenancy.

At the age of 25, Jamie was one of the new wave of young, aspiring business men and women who have worked their way up through the ranks and (with the right support from Palmers) are ready, to seize the opportunity of running their own business.

Jamie took over what was already a thriving pub, but has gone further and excelled with new ideas, enhanced service and business acumen that all bodes well for the future.

The brewery invested in a refurbishment of the pub to transform the main trading areas and support Jamie in developing the food side of the business. At the same time, offering advice and training on a new wine range that would sit well in his restaurant space.

Several years later, Jamie has maintained the already strong bar trade, thus cementing his place as a popular village pub that draws back visitors to the area time and time again.

About Taste of the West

Taste of the West are the largest independent regional food group in the UK. Serving to promote and support the best local food and drink from the region, covering Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.
The fantastic award annual scheme highlights the top food and drink producers in the West Country, as well as pubs and restaurants from the area. The round logo has become a recognisable mark of exceptionally high standard where you eat and shop for local food and drink.

Lockdown heroes

Jamie and Amy were recognised for the service given to the community during lockdown. Despite all the uncertainties over the last 12 months, the fantastic food and drink businesses in the area have certainly risen to the challenge to provide an excellent service. In June 2021, The George Inn were presented with the Bridport Local Food & Drink Lockdown Heroes – Special Award for Outstanding Service.
From the first lockdown in March 2020 Jamie and Amy have done all they can to support the village. Delivering hot meals as well as delivering milk, groceries and newspapers to the vulnerable and elderly in the village. This dedication continued despite the pub being closed and becoming new parents to a baby boy.

Well done Jamie and Amy from all the team at Palmers Brewery!
