Lucy Young is a Ceramicist who was recently commissioned to create some incredible tankards for Palmers Brewery.

We are delighted to collaborate with Lucy Young Ceramics, who specialises in creating bespoke hand thrown ceramic tankards from her pottery workshop at Maws Craft Centre in Ironbridge, Shropshire. For this collaboration, Lucy designed the tankard to reflect Palmers Brewery’s long tradition in brewing and dedication to craftsmanship.

Each tankard is handmade on a pottery wheel, starting with throwing the main shape from a lump of stoneware clay. The handle is then carefully attached, followed by creating a stencil of the brewery’s logo, hand printing the design, and transferring it onto the tankard. The piece then slowly dries and is bisque fired in an electric kiln, before being half-dipped in the final glaze and undergoing a final firing in the kiln. This takes another 24 hours to heat up and cool down.

The result balances beauty and function, highlighting the natural texture of the clay while celebrating the tactile joy of drinking from a handcrafted vessel.

Lucy has collaborated with over 30 breweries across the UK, from modern craft breweries like Deya, Verdant and Northern Monk to traditional breweries like Harvey’s Brewery in Lewes, tailoring each tankard to reflect the brewery’s branding and values. We are very proud she has had the time to work with us!

Her work continues a family tradition, inspired by her father, who made tankards for breweries in the Cotswolds back in the 1980s.

Thank you, Lucy! Tankards will be available to purchase online or from Palmers Wine Store shortly.
