Visit West Dorset and stay at one of our Inns
Dorset is home to some of the most unique visitor attractions and famous landmarks in the country. If you’re planning a trip to Dorset and looking for places to go and things to do you’re in for a treat. Not only does Dorset have the World famous Jurassic Coast but some of the most picturesque towns and villages you could wish for. There’s always the option of a stay in our West Dorset accommodation in one of our traditional pubs, each one in prime location.
We’ve highlighted some of the best things to do that you wouldn’t want to miss in Dorset.
Coastal things to do in Dorset
No trip to Dorset would be complete without experiencing at least ome part of the Jurassic Coast. The UNESCO accredited World Heritage Site stretches for 95 from Studland all the way to Exmouth in Devon. Some of the most iconic parts include Old Harry Rocks, Durdle Door as well as Golden Cap and the Lyme Regis Cob.
The more adventurous traveller would definitely enjoy taking to the water and experiencing Lyme Bay on a RIB charter. Explore the water via a relaxing cruise and see the Jurassic Coast from a unique perspective.
Approximately 1.5 miles south of Bridport, West Bay is a quaint seaside resort made more famous as the setting for ITV’s drama series Broadchurch. A chance to hunt for fossils with a backdrop of stunning coastal scenery or kick back and soak up the atmosphere around the picturesque harbour.
If you’re looking for coastal accommodation why not try the multi-award winning Anchor Inn for a beach location at Seatown. For a warm West Bay welcome book a room at The West Bay Hotel, Bridport Arms or George Hotel. For a stay in the beautiful seaside town of Lyme Regis The Pilot Boat and Cobb Arms have high quality rooms and great food. Washed down with a fine Palmers ale of course!
Escape to the countryside
It’s not just coastal activities that Dorset has in plentiful supply. The countryside is brimming with scenic views, enjoyable walks and must-see places to visit. In West Dorset why not experience the enchanting Subtropical Gardens at Abbotsbury or the iconic landscape at Colmer’s Hill. The 417 foot high pretty hill takes roughly 45 minutes to walk up its steady slope where you can admire the country views from the summit.
Other stand out and highly recommended Dorset attractions include Monkey World, Swanage Railway and the legendary Cerne Abbas Giant. 55 metres in length, the ancient hill figure is a depiction of a nude male figure wielding a large club in his right hand.
We throughly recommend the wonderful countryside walks in and around the village of Cerne Abbas rounded off with a pint of fine real ale in The New Inn. This fine example of a Palmers pub is a 13th century establishment with 12 en-suite bedrooms. The pub gained widespread notoriety in 2014 when it was named the nation’s best Inn.
Go to town in Dorset
Dorset has so many towns and villages to choose from. All worth visiting for different reasons so it depends whether you are looking for a more vibrant and urban atmosphere or something much quieter where you can enjoy the peace and tranquility.
Bridport is known for its bustling market days, friendly pubs and quirky events like the Bridport Hat Festival. It’s also the home of our historic brewhouse at Palmers – where you could experience one of our brewery tours.
