Palmers Brewery Celebrates 230 Years

Celebrating 230 Years of Palmers Brewery

This year, Palmers Brewery celebrate 230 years of brewing in Bridport. Reaching such a milestone is something we at Palmers are incredibly proud of, therefore we thought it fitting to mark the occasion with an heritage ale. This Spring, we have resurrected a firm favourite from the cellars, our Bridport Bitter.

Previously enjoyed by generations of ale drinkers, Bridport Bitter was originally brewed in 1896 and discontinued after the Millennium, the Bridport Bitter historic pump clip image has been revived from an original painting by Bridport sign writer, George Biles, who created many designs for Palmers over a 60-year period.

The history of Bridport Bitter…

Made possible with help from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the George Biles Project delivered by Bridport Town Council was formed in June 2023. The project aims to honour George who lived in Bridport throughout his life, by digitising the collection of artworks held here at Palmers Brewery, supporting signwriting workshops for young people in Bridport and holding a public exhibition of George’s works in Summer 2024. With help from Artist Signwriter, Jemma Thompson, and inspiration from the George Biles Project, we thought it only fitting for this iconic image to be the updated face of Bridport Bitter.

The Community Fund…

In an effort to give back to our local community, Palmers will donate 10p per pint sold to the Palmers Community Fund. That means, when you buy a pint of Bridport Bitter, you’re putting money straight back into the local community.

Our Brewery…

Much of the equipment in our historic brewhouse dates back as far as Bridport Bitter and has been in continual use throughout the 20th Century. The brewhouse team strive daily to produce the award-winning ales Palmers are known for and keep our brewing traditions alive.
